Who we are

This Privacy Policy applies to the Star Lore mobile and web application (the “App”). The App helps you learn and identify constellations through interactive games and educational content.

Data we collect

The App stores a small amount of data locally on your device to enable core functionality:

1) Optional display name

• Type: Display name you enter in the App.
• Use: Shown in the UI for personalization.
• Storage: On iOS/Android, stored in a hardware-backed secure store via expo-secure-store. On web, stored in browser-backed storage (see Security below).

2) Public profile & app state

• Use: To manage onboarding and general app behavior.
• Storage: On-device application storage.

3) Game statistics

To power progress, achievements, and stats displays, the App stores gameplay data such as:

No sensitive device data (e.g., precise location, contacts, photos, microphone, advertising identifiers) is collected by the App, and the App does not request access to these device permissions.

How we use your data

• Personalize the App with your display name.
• Track your progress, achievements, and gameplay statistics.
• Improve your learning experience (e.g., showing most-identified constellations).

We do not use your data for advertising, cross-site tracking, or profiling, and we do not transfer your data to our servers.

Where data is stored and how it’s secured

• On-device only: All data listed above is stored locally on your device. We do not operate a backend for this App.
• Encrypted storage for display name (iOS/Android): We use expo-secure-store, which leverages iOS Keychain and Android Keystore for hardware-backed encryption, where available.
• Web fallback: On the web, secure storage is not available and a browser-backed storage mechanism is used. While convenient, browser storage may be less secure than native secure storage on mobile devices.
• Public/non-sensitive fields: Some non-sensitive app state (e.g., onboarding progress, gameplay stats) is stored in standard on-device app storage.

While we take reasonable measures appropriate to an on-device-only educational app, no storage mechanism is perfectly secure. If your device is compromised, your data could be at risk.

Data sharing and third parties

• No sharing or selling: We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties.
• No analytics or ads: The App does not include analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, crash reporting, or other tracking tools.
• External links: The App links to third-party resources for educational credits (for example, NOIRLab and Creative Commons). When you open those links, you will leave the App and visit an external website governed by its own privacy policy.

Children’s privacy

The App can be used by learners of all ages and collects only minimal data needed to operate (an optional display name and local gameplay statistics). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children beyond this on-device data. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child has provided additional personal information, please see the Deletion section below.

Your choices and controls

• Provide or change your display name: You can edit your display name in the App’s settings.
• Delete your data (mobile): Because data is stored on-device only, you can remove all app data by uninstalling the App or by using your operating system’s “Clear app data/Reset app storage” function.
• Delete your data (web): If using the web version, you can clear site data/storage for the App’s domain via your browser’s settings.
• No account to delete: The App does not create user accounts or store data on servers; therefore, there is no server-side account or cloud data to delete or export.

Data retention

Your data remains on your device until you delete it using your device settings or uninstall the App. We do not retain copies of your data on our servers.

International transfers

We do not transfer your data internationally because we do not collect or store your data on our servers. All data remains on your device.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect improvements to the App or legal requirements. When we do, we will update the “Effective Date” at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
